Manufacturing

The manufacturing industry is vast and diverse.  Categories range from construction and engineering to telecommunications and transportation.  The size and scale of manufacturing processes can range from working in factories with enormous work forces to small independent companies making individual products.

How we can help:

In an industry such as manufacturing where manual handling operations are prevalent, machinery is often used on a daily basis and working environments can be noisy and potentially dangerous, implementing ergonomics/human factors can be invaluable in improving safety, creating a more comfortable workspace and reducing the risks that are associated with working in manufacturing.  InterAction of Bath can provide a range of training and information services to employers and employees who might be looking to improve the safety of their workplace.  If you want to re-assess the layout or design of your workstations to improve productivity and efficiency, we can provide workplace and DSE assessments.

What we can provide :

  • Training:  InterAction of Bath offers training in a number of areas relevant to the manufacturing industry.  DSE Assessment training can provide companies the knowledge and understanding to assess their workstations.  Particularly important is the need to highlight the impact poor posture can have on a work force
  • Manual Handling:  More than 25% of the accidents reported to the UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) each year are associated with manual handling.  It is accepted that there will always be risks involved with the manual handling of goods, products, equipment, but there are ways that these risks can be reduced.  Here at InterAction of Bath we offer manual handling risk analysis through assessments and remediation plans.  We also provide a manual handling training course which imparts knowledge and guidance to employers and employees on safer working practices.
  • Workspace Assessments:  Working environments (or ‘workspaces’) need to be assessed to ensure the health, safety and efficiency of those who work within.  The result might be to reduce the risk of injury or to ensure particular employees do not aggravate existing health problems.  Our services in this area include: design for anthropometric requirements, manual handling risk analysis and environmental and safety assessments.
  • Software:  We have designed and developed a number of software tools that help provide detailed and accurate analysis of manual handling and posture.  With these tools, the user can assess their own workstations quickly and effectively.

Work we have done:

We have worked on a number of projects within the manufacturing industry, including:

  • Assessment and remediation of manual handling risks in a valve actuator factory.
  • Workspace design for Royal Mail's bureau de change facility.
  • Workplace assessment for an automotive manufacturer.  Assessment of the workstation layout, job design and controls and displays.
  • Review of a parcel sorting depot, including workstation design and human-computer interface design.
