Rail

How we can help:

If you are in the process of designing a control room or you need a comprehensive assessment of a current workstation, InterAction of Bath can provide the service you may require.  We are skilled in infrasturcture evaluation, appraisal of design plans for ease of movement through the building and accident investigation.

What we can provide:

  • Control room design: A control room is a vital component for the everyday running of the rail industry.  The control room is responsible for multiple functions, including monitoring and analysing the performance of the rail system currently in operation.  It is therefore essential the control room is well designed and operable in order to fulfil the duties effectively and efficiently as required.
  • Workstation Design:  InterAction of Bath applies ergonomic design principles to the layout of workstations in order to provide a safer and more efficient working environment.  Attempting to reduce the amount of sick leave taken due to injuries caused at work is a primary incentive as to why the design of a workstation is so important
  • Software:  Our software programmes such as IDEAS and InterPosture can be used by employees to self-assess their own workstations.  The relative ‘easy to use’ nature of the programmes provides companies the opportunity to complete and record their own workstation assessments.
  • Accident investigation into how and why accidents may be prevalent.
  • Cognitive loading studies for employees, mental workload analysis in order to determine whether the tasks required are suitable to be performed in integration with current duties.
  • Usability studies into any hardware or software employees or the public are expected to interact with during the use of your product.

Work we have done:

InterAction of Bath has worked on a number of projects within the rail industry, including:

  • A thorough review of rail depot accidents occurring between 1998 and 2004 followed by the development of national mitigation strategies.  The review investigated the cause of and how frequently accidents occurred at the depots.  Through this, we could identify failures within the system and allowed us to develop and introduce mitigations that could reduce the risk of further accidents.
  • Human Factors assessment of the New Automatic Driver Box on the London Underground.  InterAction of Bath were commissioned to assess both the physical and cognitive tasks involved with the introduction of a new piece of equipment into the workplace.  Our consultants used Human Factors analysis techniques and user experience methods to successfully integrate the equipment.
  • Human Factors support to the Jubilee Line Extension Project.  Assessing the usability of the Control Room workspace and in particular, the layout of the computer screens was central to this project.  Successful human computer interaction is vital to maintaining a safe and efficient control room.
  • Human Factors assessment of a rail tug unit by human-machine interface analysis and workstation assessment.
