Training

InterAction of Bath Ltd provides training in most aspects of Human Factors, usually tailored to the specific requirements of the client. We've delivered courses to clients in the defence and civil sectors, including the MoD's Defence Equipment and Support. We continually update our courses to stay current with legislation and best practice. Our comfortable training facilities in central Bath are usually the venue but we're more than happy to travel to the client's premises.

Human Factors - an introduction

A one-day training course in the basics of the discipline of Human Factors (HF), otherwise known as ergonomics, Human Performance Engineering, user-centred design or usability engineering. Using examples drawn from a wide range of industries, the importance of HF is emphasised and the techniques involved are explained.

This one-day course is designed to impart a basic understanding of the subject. By the end of the course, delegates can be expected to be familiar with core areas and the improvements good HF practice can make to safety, efficiency and productivity.

The first module defines the discipline, outlines its development and explains the levels at which it can be applied: the operator, the task, the equipment, the environment and the organisation. The second module takes a case study approach to high-profile catastrophes and highlights how, if HF had been addressed, they may have been avoided. Having set the scene, the course considers human-computer interaction, task analysis, workstation design, environmental ergonomics and human reliability.

The course is designed for those requiring a working understanding of Human Factors. It has been accredited by the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors at level 2, and delegates will be awarded a certificate from the IEHF.

Human Factors Practitioner (2-Day)

The discipline of HF is otherwise known as ergonomics, human performance engineering, user-centred design, usability engineering or people-related requirements. This course takes to a higher level some of the themes developed in the basic Human Factors – an introduction course, and introduces new concepts in the challenging areas of cognition, task analysis and biomechanics.

The course is designed for delegates with a deep interest in the subject or a need to know more than just the fundamentals. On completion, delegates will have a deeper understanding of Human Factors. They can be expected to be aware of the importance and value of a person-centred approach and possess some familiarity with the practice of the subject.

The knowledge they gain from the course will benefit them professionally and benefit their sponsoring organisation through improved product design, safety and productivity.

Safety Case Development

A one-day training course in the development of safety cases as required by UK Ministry of Defence procurement process. The course describes the preparation of safety documentation in accordance with military standards, in particular Defence Standard 00-56.

This course is designed to impart a basic understanding of the concepts underlying safety analysis, and of the structure and rationale of the safety documentation required by the Ministry of Defence DE&S. The course describes the methods and procedures for preparing clear, concise and comprehensive documents in accordance with specific standards, notably Defence Standard 00-56 and Joint Service Publication (JSP) 454.

The course is designed for defence industry personnel such as:
  • Engineers and designers who make decisions relating to and affecting the safety of new or modified military systems
  • Project managers who require an overview of safety case development
  • Operations managers who need an awareness of the risks associated with the equipment and the ways in which they are controlled.
  • Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) Managers
On completing this course, delegates will possess a basic understanding of safety analysis. This knowledge will benefit them directly in a professional sense and benefit their sponsoring organisation through their increased perception of the risks associated with the use of defence equipment and the ways of avoiding them throughout the CADMID cycle.

Human Factors Integration

A one-day training course in the Human Factors Integration (HFI) process, as defined by the UK Ministry of Defence. HFI has risen to prominence in the defence sector in the last 20 years. It is a method of systematically incorporating HF techniques and analyses into all phases of the SMART procurement process for military equipment, so that the delivered system is operable, efficient and safe for the user. Having briefly reviewed the discipline of HF, the course describes how it should be integrated with the other procurement activities throughout the SMART process.

By the end of the course, delegates can be expected to understand the HFI process, the basic issues it addresses, the seven HFI domains, the management of HFI and the associated technical activities.

The course is designed for those requiring a working understanding of Human Factors Integration. No previous knowledge of Human Factors is necessary.

Corporate Wellness

This one-day training course provides delegates with an overview of Corporate Wellness (CW), with a focus on the role that ergonomics can play in corporate wellness programmes. The course outlines the three domains of health and well-being, while also imparting delegates with practical experience on how to structure a CW programme.

By the end of the course, delegates should have an understanding of the three domains of health, namely physical, emotional and behavioural and should be able to provide their own companies with initiatives to improve employee morale and performance.

DSE Assessor Training

Display screen equipment (DSE) workstations are ubiquitous and improve the efficiency and quality of our working lives. Yet they can also affect us adversely if not configured correctly to support good working postures and practices. In fact employers have a duty to assess and (if necessary) improve the ergonomics of DSE workstations, as well as inform staff of the proper methods of working.

Our course imparts the skills and knowledge for delegates to assess workstations, report on assessments, and provide briefings to employees. The course systematically covers the legislative requirements for workstations, outlines the common problems, and advises on solutions. It also presents methods of assessment, including checklists, and details suitable ways of reporting findings.

Safer Manual Handling

Manual handling operations in the UK fall under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations, which mandate minimum requirements for the design, layout, and assessment of manual handling tasks, as well as placing a responsibility on employers to train personnel in safe methods of work. Our course satisfies the legislation by imparting the skills and knowledge employees need to minimise manual handling risks. The course is fully up to date with legislation and current thinking in the area. We present the course as a series of short modules, supplemented by video and consolidated with practical exercises.
